This atypical western is shot in the beautiful and snowy Pacific Northwest with the melancholy sounds of Leonard Cohen throughout. A charismatic, somewhat dopey gambler played by Warren Beatty and a shrewd madam played by Julie Christie become business partners and open a tavern/whorehouse. Their enterprise thrives until a major mining operation is determined to buy him out at any cost. This film demands your full attention but pays off immensely with smart dialogue and dreamy cinematography.
