Not too long from now, a woman pilgrimages to her birthplace, a rural Brazilian village, for her grandmother’s funeral. As she reconnects with friends and family from her childhood, a series of unexplained, increasingly ominous events – the village’s sudden disappearance from digital maps, visits by surveillance drones, bullet holes in trucks – creates an atmosphere of unease within the community. The villagers are about to be paid a visit by hunters – of human prey. Easily the most sensational Brazilian film of 2019, “Bacurau” paints a raw and gripping portrait of a community rallying to defend itself from an outside menace.
